Silicon chips are common in everyday life, and to many these little plastic packages are opaque mysteries -- their inner workings are close to magic even to those familiar with hardware. Recent advancements in Electronic Design Automation have begun to open this notoriously mysterious corner of design. Open source projects have begun to do for chip design what it has already done for FPGAs, compilers, and operating systems -- bring openness to a field that has been dominated by closed-source players. This talk will discuss what it means for hardware design to be open and what we can do with the tools of today. We'll also cover what is not yet possible, and what we hope to be able to do in the future. As a nice side benefit of the openness of these processes, there will be lots of pretty pictures of silicon designs!
