How can we help Open Source become more Sustainable? One way we are working on that at IEEE SA OPEN is via Standards such as OSSPG, Open Source Software Project Governance. Often at IEEE SA, we focus on Recommended Practices before creating a Set Standard that could accidentally hurt or limit innovation. Also with Individual Standards, we focus on Consensus Building so that Corporate Dominance does not occur. If done well, Diversity is a key element in consensus focused standards that will stand the test of time. We have found those Recommended Practices to be extremely useful to some new funding models that are arising in the Open Source Community such as government and nonprofit foundations. I will review what is happening but much more importantly what WE can make happen. We as a community need to create more of these Recommended Practices. Why would you want to do this? How to do this effectively? What are some tactics and strategies? And, how do you get support to work on this?
