When developing technologies that include mobile, start with mobile first.

Developing mobile-first when designing VPN protocols takes into account unique edge cases developers won’t traditionally find on desktop apps. While desktop apps are more reliable, stable, and quick–Android and iOS app developers find themselves needing to take into account other challenging factors in a mobile environment, such as power consumption, performance, and constantly changing networking environments.

Through this session, Pete will share his learnings from developing and integrating VPN clients into different build environments. Using Lightway as a case study (a new, open-source VPN protocol built for the mobile-first world), discover what unique edge cases and issues exist when building and adapting it for 4 million people around the world–quickly, reliably, and most importantly, safely.

This session will also discuss the importance of open-source VPN protocols in the modern day, how creating and releasing Open Source software can bring tangible benefits to businesses, and how to gain traction in creating and supporting an Open Source community.
